THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
The endocrine system is a system filled with glands. It releases hormones that influence just about every fuction, cell and organ that is in our body. It is a big impact in growth, mood, reproductive systems, metabolism and tissue function. So basically, the endocrine system is in charge of processes in the body that occur slowly. But if any hormone has too much or too little it can cause problems. For example, if there is too much growth hormone the person will be extra tall. If there is too little of the growth hormone the person will be extra short. Doctors can usually treat it though.
PARTS OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
The hypothalamus, thyroid, parathyroids, pituitary, adrenals, the reproductive glands, and the pineal body are the parts of the endocrine system. Some organs that are not part of the endocrine system also produce and then release hormones. The pituitary gland is often considered the most important part of the endocrine system and is divided into two parts, the posterior lobe and the anterior lobe. The thyroid is in the lower part of your neck and makes the thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine and thyroxine. Those hormones are what controls the rate that cells burn their fuels from food to produce your energy. Thyroid hormones also take a big part in the development of the brain and bone growth. Parathyroids are the four tiny glands that are attached to the thyroid. The parathyroid hormone helps regulate the level of calcium in your blood. It does that with the help of calcitonin which the thyroid produces.
